Jonathan Burton

Burton was born and raised in New Brunswick, New Jersey where he got his early training as a guitarist from his father who played weekends with local bands in the surrounding areas. As with most notable artist, Jonathan also began his training in the high school band and choir.

Early in his development Jonathan landed a gig with The Manhattans. It was during a trip with The Manhattans to Detroit that his work on guitar, bass and keyboards attracted the attention of producer Don Davis (Johnny Taylor, Staple Singers, etc.) who at the time was producing another popular male vocal group, The Dramatics. This work with Don Davis led to other studio assignments with such stand out acts as Regina Belle, Bill Pinkney and The Drifters, George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic, The Chairmen of the Board, and Larry Blackmon’s Cameo. Burton and Davis also produced the motion picture soundtrack to the movie “Electric Boogaloo”, released by Polygram and Tri Star Pictures.

In the studios around Detroit, his name and fame spread like wildfire and he became one of the most sought after talents in the area. Now living in Charlotte, North Carolina, Jonathan Burton is still one of the most in demand session musicians in the nation. His passionate guitar, bass, keyboard and vocal work have been signatures on many recording sessions from New York to Atlanta.

**** Burton is one of those folks whose name I've heard or read several times but could only place him with a 2002 CD distributed by Malaco called "Funky House Party". Apparently he's released several LPs as this 16-track collection is said to consist of some newbies in addition to his "best yet" as the title says. Speaking of that Malaco (released on Juana) record, the cut "Funky House Party" was a hot dance jam and "Best Time Of My Life" was a drop-dead gorgeous ballad. The two best choices from that project and they're included on "Cruise Control & The Best Yet". So I have to assume this sort of smart song selection draws from other records. Being that the sound quality and production styles fluctuate throughout (sorta like Chuck Roberson's "Expressions" CD) it's obvious these tracks date from now to back perhaps a decade or so. A little research revealed that Burton at one time played with the Manhattens and co-produced the music to the Disco movie "Electric Boogaloo". Nevertheless, I couldn't locate any other full lengths out there on JB. I know there was a single on Roy C's Three gems label called "She's Pouring It On" (also appears here). Whatever the case this disc makes a strong case for Burton being one of the more criminally-neglected talents on the circuit. "Cruise Control" opens with a fine shuffle-bumper called "It Took A Woman" followed by the equally catchy Retro-Soul "Lovable", featuring some perfect backing vocals (uncredited) on the creamy refrain. The percussive title cut is a Rick James-inspired dancer ideal for the clubs while "Steppin' All Nite Long" is a seriously funky jam propelled by a shufflin' rhythm and New Jack delivery (but it sounds wholly modern). Burton can sho' nuff sing for the ladies too. "Something's Got To Give" has every right to air on Mainstream R & B- a commanding vocal pushes this slow jam to the next level. The North Carolina (where Burton grew up) Beach crowd should be diggin' "Let's Do It For Old Time's Sake" and there's even some potent gospel with "I'm Not Gonna Rest". This disc may make a Jonathan Burton fan out of you too.
